Soft cover. Condizione: Very Good. This November 1930 issue of "Theatre Arts Monthly" is superb for many reasons! It, as always has lots of wonderful photographs, illustrations, and articles. There is a broad field covered in this issue, from articles on Soviet Russian Music by Nikolai Sokoloff, and Chinese Folk-Dramas by Kwei Chen. There are lots of fine photographs ( In our limited selection we are showing Lynne Fontanne (as Elizabeth I), Helen Hayes, Emil Jannings and Hilde Wangel). There is much, much more in this excellent issue from the 11th month of 1930 from an article about Ibsen, to stage costumes, and such things as the Little Theatre, Repertory theatre (Seattle), and children's theatre. ************************************ "Theatre Arts Monthly" was, for years, one of the leading periodicals dealing with stage design and the problems of dramatic presentations. It was founded as "Theatre Arts Magazine" by Sheldon Warren Cheney, who was a leading author and drama critic. Eventually it's name was changed to "Theatre Arts Monthly". It ran from 1916 to 1964. The magazine's editorial staff supported the Little Theatre Movement and the establishment of the American National Theatre and Academy. It was also very supportive of emerging dramatists and performing artists such as Martha Graham, Jo Mielziner, Eugene O'Neill, and Thorton Wilder. It presented substantial articles devoted to all things theatre, but with an emphasis on production, costume and theatre design. It is a treasure of an issue, with lots of good reading. Beautiful volume of wood engravings specifically from the Northern region of China, published by Gaoyuan Bookstore, 1947, 130 woodcuts by Gu Yuan, Li Chun Ku Yuan, Li Chun, Hu I-Chuan, Chiao Hsing-ho, Mao Ning, Shih Lo, Wang Liu-Chiu, Sou Yu, Chi Kwei-sheng, Ma Ta, Wu Cha, Hsia Feng, Chen Shu-liang, Chi Dan, Yan Han, Ghang Wang, etc (夏 風, 楊涵, 戚 單, 郭 鈞, 張 望, 古元, 力 羣, 王流秋, 馬 達) with several in bold bright color, though largely in black and white. 125pp. Index and introduction in English and Chinese, table of contents reproduced in both languages in laid-in foldout insert. Excellent condition overall, being sturdy, well bound and clean. Pages age toned pretty evenly throughout, although there are several pages on which the color prints have been made that have avoided this fate, perhaps being acid free type of paper. Even though toned, the black and white prints are bold, and the color ones on the acid free paper are quite brilliant and beautiful. Slight bit of waviness to the side margins of those pages, not found elsewhere. Covers mostly clean, with one very lightly bumped area to the front cover. A couple of white paint stains on the spine and a very small bit of loss to the paper of the spine at the crown. Spine text still legible. Back cover toned and with some very minor staining and a couple of tiny closed tears. Despite all of this, a lovely example, which is now covered in mylar.
