Good condition overall.; 'Passion for Porcelain: Masterpieces of Ceramics from the British Museum and the Victoria and Albert Museum' is a collaborative project between the National Museum of China, the British Museum and the Victoria and Albert Museum. This important exhibition, held before the opening of the London 2012 Olympics and at the celebration of the NMC's centennial, symbolizes the fruits of forty-year cultural exchange since the establishment of China- UK diplomatic relations. Porcelain is a significant invention in ancient China. It has gained global reputation for its unique firing techniques and beautiful design. Archeologists find that porcelain was exported for the first time in the Tang dynasty. During the Song and Yuan dynasties, porcelain exportation increased considerably and by the Ming to Qing period had reached a high point. Exquisite Chinese porcelain traded in large quantities across Asia, Africa and Europe successfully introduced China homeland of porcelain to the world and brought a nice English name for this country. The current exhibition features 163 examples of porcelain from the British Museum and the V&A, highlighting early Ming export wares, special orders in China, European imitations during the mid-Qing dynasty and classical Chinese porcelain collected in Britain. These objects tell the fascinating story of Chinese export porcelains, illustrating their exceptional beauty and impact on Western ceramics as well as daily life. The transmission of Chinese porcelain to the West is accompanied by the spread of Chinese culture. Both China and the West have benefited greatly from porcelain trade, in terms of material, technique, decorative pattern, enamelling and the spread of ceramic culture. Export porcelain, as the medium of culture exchange, plays a key role in helping the West understand Chinese culture." excerpt from the preface by Lu Zhangshen, Director, National Museum of China.
