Première édition française, très augmentée, avec en particulier une longue préface du traducteur, l'Abbé de La Chapelle, essentiellement consacrée à la transfusion sanguine (pp. XXIV-LXXV). L'abbé de la Chapelle décrit précisément le procédé opératoire et rapporte plusieurs expériences de transfusion sanguine réalisée sur des animaux (par Lower, Edmond King, Coxe, . ), avec des résultats divergents. Il écrit : "quand la transfusion ne seroit qu'une expérience curieuse (ce que je suis rès-éloigné de penser) on devroit être porté à la renouveller, par la seule opposition des faits." Cet ouvrage de Cheyne est le plus représentatif de sa pensée et de ses doctrines. Cheyne donne de nombreux conseils hygiéno-diététiques. Il rattache les troubles mentaux à des causes physiques. George Cheyne (1671 - 1743), né en Ecosse, exerça la médecine à Bath. Il adopta les principes des iatromathématiciens.
