By comparing their results with those obtained by a similar mission to Lapland, the Académie hoped to settle the controversy between the Newtonians and the Cartesians over whether the earth was flattened or elongated at the poles. La Condamine embarked for South America in 1735, accompanied by his fellow Academiciens Godin and Bouguer and the naturalist Joseph De Jussieu ; he reached Quito, in Peru, in June of the following year. The expedition's geodetic measurements, hampered by the rugged terrain and quarrels between the scientists, were completed in 1743, and eventually proved the validity of Newton's hypothesis".
