Original publisher's cloth with gilt embossed title to the spine and some light blind-stamping to the boards. Steel engraved frontispiece of St. Bernard. The textblock remains in very good, very clean condition, but for a major split between pages 192 and 193 where only one cord holds to the two halves of the textblock still together. There are splits between the two inner hinges with the front board somewhat shaken but still attached. There is an ex-library bookplate to the front paste-down and to the front endpaper with a couple of ink letters to the head of the front endpaper. There is significant rubbing to the head and tail of the spine with some associated loss of cloth. There is a closed split towards the tail of the spine. A tight, clean good minus copy of this 1855 first edition in this format.
