Louis XVI en fonde douze avec l'aide du comte de Saint-Germain pour réformer son armée un peu trop mondaine. L'enseignement donné à Sorèze prend alors des allures militaires. Des officiers de Paris viennent donner des cours d'art militaire, les professeurs habituels donnent des cours de religion, de lettres, de sciences. Une très grande place est attribuée aux sports.
