In 1857 prior to his governorship he accompanied William Balfour Backie in his exploration of the Niger, higher than any Europeans had previously, this book is created from his journals of the expedition. Includes 22*b/w photographs and illustrations. xiii+230pp. Blue cloth boards with light shelf-wear to edges. Spine cloth is sunned. Upper board is lightly bowed. Preliminary pages foxed. Splitting to the lower hinge of several pages have left the boards fully attached to the text-block but a little tender.
