Lee Thayer, born Emma Redington Lee on April 5, 1874, in Troy, Pennsylvania, was a notable American mystery writer renowned for her prolific contributions to the genre during the twentieth century. Growing up in a large family, she received education in art at Cooper Art School and Pratt Institute Art School before embarking on a career as an interior decorator, where she gained recognition for her artistic skills. Thayer's writing journey began with her first book, an illustrated guide for children, followed by her first murder mystery, The Mystery of the Thirteenth Floor, published in 1919, which introduced the detective duo Peter Clancy and his valet Wiggar. Thayer's novels were characterized by their lack of explicit violence or sexual content, appealing to a post-World War I audience looking for engaging stories. Lee Thayer with co-founder (Henry Thayer) created Decorative Designers, a New York firm that created thousands of book cover designs. The firm was started about 1895 by Henry, Emma joined him the following year, they married in 1909, were divorced in 1932 and DD closed. COLI1900BDIB - 04/26 - HK3532. Lee Thayer (illustratore).

Sections include: "Stories from Strange Books", "Japanese Studies", and "Fantasies". Included are pieces titled "The Reconciliation" (a ghost story featured in the 1964 movie, "Kwaidan"), "The Corpse-Rider", "Japanese Female Names", "Old Japanese Songs", "Gothic Horror", "Levitation", "Nightmare-Touch", and "Readings from a Dream-Book". One chapter is entitled "Sémi" (Cicada) and contains five full-page plates of Japanese cicadas, as well as descriptions of their individual sounds, when they appear, and their part in Japanese culture. For the Japanese, cicadas evoke summertime, impermanence, and evocation of memories. AUTHOR LAFCADIO HEARN aka Patrick Lafcadio Tessima Carlos Hearn (1850-1904), of Greek and Irish parentage, traveled to Japan in 1890, becoming an assimilated westerner with a deep interest in Japanese culture. He married Setsuko Koizumi, the daughter of a samurai family, and became known as Yakumo Koizumi. He later was Professor of English Literature at Tokyo Imperial University. This was his third collection of stories. American Book COVER DESIGNER, LEE THAYER (1874- 1973) was also a mystery writer. She co-founded, along with her husband, the Decorative Designers, a graphic arts group which provided book cover designs during the height of popularity for this sort of look.
