Tartus) õppis Hugo Treffneri gümnaasiumis (siis Tartu I keskkool), lõpetas Tartu Ülikooli füüsikuna. Töötas Tõravere Observatooriumi juures (Eesti Teaduste Akadeemia Füüsika ja Astronoomia Instituut, hiljem Astrofüüsika ja Atmosfäärifüüsika Instituut), alates 1992. a. Tartu Ülikoolis taimefüsioloogia õppetooli juhataja; emeriteerus 2003. a. Teadustöö algas taimkatte produktsiooniteooria alal, hiljem keskendus taimelehtede fotosünteesi uurimisele.
