paperback. 8.5 x 11 inches. paperback. 120 pages. "Leafing through the preliminary pages of this new catalogue documenting the career of Monique Lallier, we are greeted with several photographs of the artist at work. which serves to introduce our subject and sets the tone for the rest of the catalogue -- a tone that is intimate and collegial, as if we were seated there beside Lallier and might just ask what it is she has been up to." - Kevin M. O'Sullivan, Papers of the Bibliographical Society of America "Well produced and beautifully illustrated. The sheer variety in design and technique make this collection stand out. There is no such thing as a 'typical Lallier binding'. Hers are all different and in their variety a constant source of interest." - Mirjam M. Foot, The Library "It would be entirely understandable were the focus of this book more or less exclusively directed towards Lallier's creative work, a substantial legacy of undoubted excellence in its imagination, craft and technique, but this Retrospective avoids doing so by emphasising her dedication to teaching, both past and ongoing. a testament to the varied and enduring contribution that Lallier has made to the design and technique of bookbinding." - Alan Isaac, Society of Bookbinders National Newsletter "For each book displayed, often with multiple photographs, Monique tells us about the binding. . These brief little stories will draw you in and make you feel as if you are there with her as she talks." - John Neal, Bound & Lettered, Spring 2019 Catalogue for an exhibition at the Guilford College Art Gallery in Greensboro, NC from October 29, 2018 to January 6, 2019, covering 46 years of fine bindings created by Monique Lallier. The exhibition draws from private lenders and institutional collections. With appreciations by Theresa Hammond, Ara Serjoie, Peter Geraty, and Karen Hanmer, and an essay by Lallier herself. Monique Lallier is known for her creative and thoughtful approaches to the subjects of her binding projects. Her use of unusual materials such as eggshells, pewter, colorful wires, agates, lizard and snake skin -- even her own hair -- and innovative techniques including cutouts, reveals, pop-ups, and moveable parts make her bindings both distinctive and dynamic. Her binding of My Antonia by Willa Cather won a Best Binding award in an international exhibition at the Chicago Public Library in 2006. Her 2016 binding of Pantagruel was awarded a Silver Prize at the International Competition of Designer Bookbinders. Lallier supplies entertaining descriptions of the bindings from the maker's perspective, telling brief stories of projects and processes. Each binding is illustrated with expert color photographs, often from several angles and in various states of openness and closure. The variety of design, material, and technique make for a surprise on every page and an extraordinary collective impression. Monique Lallier has served as director of the American Academy of Bookbinding and president of the Association des Relieurs du Quebec. In 2010 the Guild of Book Workers (New York) presented her with the Laura Young award for service as Chair of the Standards of Excellence annual conference from 1988 to 2000. She is married to the British binder and conservator Don Etherington.

Hard Cover. Condizione: Near Fine binding. First Edition. Octavo. [10] pp., illus. One-off artist book. In pastepaper over boards, backed in painted cloth; mother of pearl onlay on the front board with title in ink. Only light rubbing to the extremities of the boards, but generally, the condition is very nice. This is an engaging artist's book comprising 6 page-spreads. The first spread functions as a title page with manuscript title in gold; the final spread, as a colophon of sorts. Each of the four internal page-spreads are thematically different and titled by hand: "Plaisir d'aimier," "Enjoy Life," "Enjoyable Nature," and "Plaisir Epicurien." Collaged spreads include painting, markings in ink and gold that are reminiscent of lettering, various onlays including pewter, a leaf, mother of pearl, photographs, etc. While there is a casualness to this book as though it is a study for another work or a vehicle for exploring techniques or visual ideas, it is remarkably cohesive in its presentation. An uncommon work to find in commerce from one of the most important design binders and binding instructors in the last five decades. A rare find. Signed.

Full Leather. Condizione: Near Fine binding. First Edition. Octavo. 52, [6] pp., frontis, illus. Limited edition, number 195 of 225 copies. This copy bound by Monique Lallier in full calf with extensive leather onlay shapes referencing the style of Alanore's illustrations. Textblock is sewn on meeting guards with the original wrappers incorporated in the binding. Silk embroidered endbands and leather doublures and flyleaves. Stamp-signed and dated 2014 by Lallier in gold on the rear pastedown. Light offsetting from the etchings and occasional light foxing, but generally, an internally clean copy, nearly fine in a fine binding, housed in clamshell that is slightly bumped at the extremities. An engaging and quirky narrative (text in French) wonderfully illustrated with 20 drypoint etchings by Alanore, some full page but most incorporated around the printing. This binding, from Lallier's personal collection, is featured in her 2018 retrospective exhibition put on by Guildford College with catalogue published by Oak Knoll Press. In it she remarks how Alanore's etchings all have prominent lips which informed her design of the cover in a leather that looks like horse (p. 100). A striking book, inside and out, bound by one of the most important design binders of the last 50 years.

Lallier, Monique (illustratore). large 8vo. full leather fan with interleaved paper with manuscript writing composing the text, housed in a custom clamshell box. Limited to six copies. A magnificent production. A fine copy in fine clamshell box. "This book is a story about mother and daughter on one side and father and son on the other side. Emily came home one day with six pieces of paper and said, "I need a fan book." When she came back the next week, I had a prototype in paper that looked like a fan! The challenge was to attach the pieces of paper in an elegant and secure way, while being sure that they would open and close properly. There is a cut in each panel where I slid the paper and glued it. Then I put each fan in a small box with lead at the bottom to stabilize the whole thing. Each panel is covered in red and green leather, along with the box. I had a great pleasure in making this book." -Monique Lallier, A Retrospective (Oak Knoll Press, 2018, p. 48). full leather fan with interleaved paper with manuscript writing composing the text, housed in a custom clamshell box.

First edition limited to 50 numbered copies of this translation from Rob Swigart. This copy is bound in a full artist-binding by Monique Lallier, award-winning bookbinder from Greensboro, NC. The binding is a full crushed green moracco with leather onlays near the foredge of the front and rear covers. The leather onlays are stamped in blind to create a riverbed pattern to resemble the river Bièvre. Title stamped in black on spine. Leather doublures and suede endpapers. Binder's name stamped on rear doublure '2017 Monique Lallier'. The book is housed in a cloth and silk covered boards clamshell box with leather spine label. Title and binder stamped on spine in dark gray. From the publisher: "The Bièvre is a small river that once ran through Paris. The text is a lengthy prose poem, an extended elegy for a corrupted and lost piece of wild landscape by the 19th Century French writer J.-K. Huysmans. From its source not far from Versailles the Bièvre loops through the 13th arrondissement of Paris. Over the centuries it has been gradually driven underground and today almost nothing remains visible within the city limits, though one can still walk along stretches running through lush vegetation to the south of the city. In 1890, Huysmans published this expanded version of an article that originally appeared in 1878. This new translation by Rob Swigart and Danielle Trudeau in a bilingual livre dartiste is illustrated with seven original etchings by French artist Claire Illouz.".

Stunning mixed media etching by the Canadian painter and printmaker known for his works on human nature and form, specifically etchings and engravings. This piece was included in the 1991 Susan Conway Carroll Galleries exhibition of Etchings and Design Bindings by Bougie and renowned binders Monique Lallier and Don Etherington. It appears Bougie printed these for Lallier and Etherington's use as greetings, here being sent with a warm sentiment to Southern California binder, Mel Kavin of Kater-Crafts. A lovely, bibliophilic item. 24x16cm bifolium of handmade cream stock, gravure by Louis-Pierre Bougie impressed on front, numbered 39/50 and signed in 1991. Inside is an holograph note from Lallier and Etherington to Mel Kavin, signed by both and with their address label adhered, dated in 2003. Few faint marginal smudges and light bumps else near fine.

FIRST EDITION. 250 x 155 mm. (9 3/4 x 6"). 300, [4] (ads) pp. EXCELLENT MODERN MAROON CRUSHED MOROCCO BY MONIQUE LALLIER (signed on front turn-in), covers and smooth spine with wrap-around inlays of green, tan, ivory, and marbled pink leathers, some textured, in an undulating pattern evocative of Virginia's Blue Ridge Mountains, gilt lettering at head of spine, pink endpapers, top edge gilt. In a matching maroon morocco-backed clamshell box. With 138 illustrations by "Porte Crayon" in the text. Front pastedown with bookplate of Daniel Henry Holmes Ingalls; front flyleaf with 19th century ink signature of A. W. Callisen. Occasional minor marginal stains, smudges, or foxing, one leaf creased, but a very nearly fine copy internally, clean and fresh, and the binding as new. This is a superb example of the work of American binder Monique Lallier, its multi-colored onlays in various leathers subtly referencing the landscape explored in these humorous sketches. As she often does, Lallier created a design here that wraps around from back to front, more fully realizing a depiction of the physical context in which the text is set. Born in 1941, Lallier began her career in the 1960s while studying in Montreal at Cotnoir Cappone School of Fashion and at L'Art de la Reliure bookbinding school with Simone B. Roy. She furthered her craft in Paris with Roger Arnoult; in Ascona, Switzerland, at the Centro del Bel Libro with Edwin Heim; and at Solothurn, Switzerland with Hugo Peller. She has served as director of the American Academy of Bookbinding and president of the Association des Relieurs du Quebec, and her work may be found in major institutions and private collections around the world. Oak Knoll Press published a retrospective of her work in 2018, which Alan Isaacs of the Society of Bookbinders called "a testament to the varied and enduring contribution that Lallier has made to the design and technique of bookbinding." The text here is by writer and illustrator David Hunter Strother (1816-88), one of the most popular contributors to "Harper's Monthly" under his pen name, "Porte Crayon" [French for "Pencil Holder"]. Based on a 500-mile hike he took with his cousins through the Appalachian Mountains of Virginia, it is "a lively, loosely organized mix of entertaining anecdotes and useful information, strewn with touches of satire and philosophical asides." (ANB) A contemporary critic for rival "Graham's Magazine" declared that the stories "form one of the most genial, whole-souled, amusing and descriptive works on local American scenery, manners and customs." Our copy was owned by (and likely bound for) Daniel Henry Holmes Ingalls (1916-99), Wales Professor of Sanskrit at Harvard University, who divided his time between a distinguished scholarly career in Massachusetts and family business interests in his beloved home state of Virginia.
