The French translator Pierre Bernard de Lamare writes in his preface that he adapted the original German edition to the French public by e.g. deleting the many theological discussions for which the French public has no taste. The original work of 5 volumes has been reduced to 3 volumes in this French edition. This German novel was one of the most widely read in 18th c. Germany.
