Elle est ornée de 98 planches hors texte, dont 3 repliées, gravées en taille-douce sous la direction de Landon et d'un plan replié, gravé et d?après Charles Picquet, « avec tous les changements survenus jusqu?en 1809 ». La mort de l?auteur Jacques-Guillaume Legrand, après la rédaction de sa première partie, provoqua le retard de la publication de la deuxième partie « Des Palais », qui fut confiée à Quatremere de Quincy. Goulet prit la suite de celui-ci et rédigea la troisième partie intitulée « Places, fontaines, théâtres et autres édifices d?utilité publique ».
