It focuses on versions and copies, exploring various stylistic features, workshop methods and the function of individual paintings in-depth. The individual essays cover the social and economic conditions in 1630s Amsterdam, the development of portraiture, comparative analyses of self-portraits and Rembrandt's history paintings, tronies and graphic works from this period. The result is a complex panorama that thoroughly reveals the stylistic, material and cultural dimensions of Rembrandt's production.; Obwohl Rembrandt zu den meisterforschten Künstlern des 17. Jahrhunderts zählt, bleiben manche Aspekte seines Schaffens im Dunkeln.
