It explores the territory of Wisconsin, a vast and sparsely populated expanse, as it transitions from a frontier wilderness to a burgeoning center of settlement and industry. Through detailed accounts of exploration, Indian tribes, and the land itself, the book paints a vivid picture of the challenges and opportunities faced by those venturing into this new land. It examines the complex and often contentious issue of boundaries, a theme resonating throughout the history of westward expansion in America. The book's historical context is grounded in the interplay of Native American cultures, French fur traders, and the burgeoning influence of the United States. The author's keen observations highlight the contrasting realities of a region on the cusp of change, where the remnants of indigenous life coexist with the ambitions of settlers. The book ultimately reveals the raw, unvarnished reality of the American frontier, as seen through the eyes of those who lived and shaped it. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format. In rare cases, an imperfection in the original, such as a blemish or missing page, may be replicated in the book. print-on-demand item.

The author traveled and investigated these sites with the support of the American Antiquarian Society. The book also draws upon articles published by other scholars working in the region, so as to provide the most comprehensive look at the subject yet published. The author presents not only maps and plans of the Wisconsin mounds, but also detailed descriptions of each and possible meanings behind their shapes and arrangements. Some of the most interesting mounds in the state are in the shapes of birds and animals, and the author explores the possible reasons why the native inhabitants built them in these forms. The book concludes with the author positing that the insights gained from studying ancient earthworks such as these may help us better understand the societies that built them. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format. In rare cases, an imperfection in the original, such as a blemish or missing page, may be replicated in the book. print-on-demand item.
