Paperback. Condizione: Good. This early work by Ring Lardner was originally published in 1924 and we are now republishing it with a brand new introductory biography. 'How to Write Short Stories' is a non-fiction, educational work on the art of creative writing. Ring Lardner was born in Niles, Michigan in 1885. He studied engineering at the Armour Institute of Technology in Chicago, but did not complete his first semester. In 1907, Lardner obtained his first job as journalist with the South Bend Times. Six years later, he published his first successful book, 'You Know Me Al', an epistolary novel written in the form of letters by 'Jack Keefe', a bush-league baseball player, to a friend back home. A huge hit, the book earned the appreciation of Virginia Woolf and others. Lardner was a close friend of F. Scott Fitzgerald and other writers of the Jazz Age. He was published by Maxwell Perkins, who also served as Fitzgerald's editor, and served as the model for the tragic character Abe North in Fitzgerald's last completed novel, 'Tender Is the Night' (1934). …

Hardcover. Condizione: Very Good. First Edition. Ring Lardner was a legendary sports reporter and short story writer active in the first part of the 20th century. His humorous, often satirical work earned him praise from, among others, Ernest Hemingway, F. Scott Fitzgerald and Virginia Woolf. This autobiography is, from the first word of the foreword by Sarah E. Spooldripper to a post mortem message at the end when Lardner describes the accident that resulted in his death by "stomach hake," a light-hearted but sharply witty biographical satire. First edition, later printing. About 5 1/2 x 7 3/4 inches, 151 pages in dark green cloth-covered boards with Lardner's name in gold on front cover and gold lettering on spine. B&w illustrations by Margaret Freeman. Sorry, no dustjacket. Lower corners of boards lightly bumped, lettering on spine slightly worn, o/w no tears, no chipping or scratching. Not ex-library, not remaindered. Text edges slightly soiled, o/w text is complete, clean and unmarked. It is interesting to note that all four of Lardner's sons became journalists and writers with varied careers. One was killed in the Spanish Civil War, another in World War II.…
