Hardcover. Condizione: Fine. Folio (350 x 225 mm). xxx + 250 pages + 13 engraved plates (last folding). T…ypographical vignette on title, ornamental initial & some typographical head- & tail pieces. Full contemporary red morocco, gilt, royal arms gilt-stamped in centres of sides, decorative gilt border in outer margins, gilt-stamped green morocco title label on spine, edges gilt; minor traces of old ink-stains. The first methodical Spanish manual on the theory and practice of dyeing with firm guidelines on an industry formerly based on mere tradition, a magnificently illustrated book. Fernández, a dyer s son from Toledo learnt his trade in a textile factory in decline; he decided to improve fabrics and dyes by intense study of foreign techniques and by 1753 set up a factory in Valencia, where he sufficiently impressed the local trade board with his industry and enthusiasm and managed to obtain financial aid and advancement. He finally became master-dyer and director of the Royal Factory of Dyes in Madrid, where he produced his well-written and beautifully designed and printed book from his experience as a master-dyer. The work is divided into three parts discussing the treatment of silks, wools and yarns, the preparation of textiles and the different stages of the colouring process. Instructions are given for applying methods and natural pigments required to achieve a particular desired colour. The engraved plates show multiple operations of the Madrid Royal Factory with workmen engaged in various tasks for dyeing fabrics with their tools and equipment such as vats, tables and kilns. The large folding engraving at the end represents a layout of the factory floor offering a panorama of the activities and processes involved. In recognition of his efforts the author was appoint ed Inspector General of Dyes for Valencia in the year of publication. A large paper copy with royal arms for presentation; light offsetting from binding in blank margins of title and at end, otherwise in fresh condition.
