Soft cover. Condizione: Near Fine. No Jacket. A series of poems by Joseff von Eichendorff written in white ink on grey hand made paper and bound in a custom binding. The work is entitled The German Soul and features a selection of romantic songs and poems which had been set to the music of Hans Pfitzner. Pfitzner composed his cantata based on Eichendorff's poems in 1920 and it was first performed in 1921. Pfizner wrote the work as Germany was losing Alsace-Lorraine to France. Although the book is neither dated nor signed it comes from the library of Hertha Rosenbaum who was previously married to the calligrapher Rudolf von Larisch under the name Hertha Larisch-Ramsauer although she continued to exhibit her work under the name Hertha Sladky (ate least according to the catalogue of the Internationale Ausstellung Moderne Kunstlerischer Schrift held in honour of von Larisch's 70th birthday in May 1926, he, Hertha Sladky and Hertha Ramsauer all lived at the same address). Rudolf von Larisch (1856-1934) was a founder member of the Austrian Werkbund in 1912 and the Wiener Werkstatte, teaching calligraphy to Hertha (1897-1972) when she was his student. She also taught book-binding and calligraphy in her own right. The text is written in a fine (although difficult), modern, cursive hand on 16 sides, each leaf followed by a white blank leaf, all bound in a concertina format gathered at the spine with white silk cords and with hand-made paper covers. Poems include Der alte Garten, Nachtgruss, Die Norne und der Ritter. The handwriting most closely resembles that developed by von Larisch although it may also be by Sladky/Ramsauer.Hertha Ramsauer produced another illuminated edition of Eichendorff's poems for the 1926 exhibition (no. 35).
