Paper Back. Condizione: Very Good. 'A spirituality of work enjoys venerable status within Christian tradition. Think Brother Lawrence washing the dishes. Think the Benedictines or the monks of Mount Athos. A spiritual understanding of work makes it possible to undertake a contemplative attitude in relationship to an active occupation. While this might, in the words of Episcopal priest, philosophy professor and carpenter Armand E. Larive,''redirect the thoughts of a pipe fitter while at his job, it doesn't address the basic issue of why pipe fitting, as such, is theologically significant.'' Most Christians get confused when it comes to synthesizing their vocation and their work in the world. Does vocation have little to do with our jobs? Something to do with our jobs? More to do with certain jobs? Or everything to do with all jobs on and off the clock? Fr. Larive defines work here as ''a remunerated activity, or one that would have to be paid if it couldn't be gotten for free'' (i.e. homemaking or certain volunteer services). He draws on his years in the academy and classroom, weaving together themes from Alasdair MacIntyre, Reinhold Niebuhr, Karl Barth, Emmanuel Levinas, Thomas Aquinas, Paul Ricoeur, Studs Terkel, Jurgen Moltmann and Miroslav Volf, then situating them securely within a Trinitarian understanding. Essentially, man is a ''created co-creator''; so it follows that creaturely work corresponds in a complementary manner with Father, Son and Holy Spirit. Read the book to learn how Larive ties it all together. Crisp as new copy, with owner name present.
