As Aristotle observed so long ago, the whole is more than the sum of its parts. However, contemporary science is dominated by reductionist concepts and tends to negle…ct the non-reproducible features of complex systems, which emerge from the interaction of the smaller units they are composed of.The book is divided into three major parts; the essays in part A highlight the conceptual basis of emergence, linking it to the philosophy of science, systems biology and sustainability. This is subsequently exemplified in part B by applying the concept of emergence to various biological disciplines, such as genetics, developmental biology, neurobiology, plant physiology and ecology. New aspects of emergence come into play when biology meets the technical sciences, as revealed in a chapter on bionics. In turn, part C adopts a broader view, revealing how the organization oflife follows a hierarchical order in terms of scalar dimensions, ranging from the molecular level to the entire biosphere. The idea that life is primarily and exclusively shaped by processes at the molecular level (and, in particular, by the information encoded in the genome) is refuted; rather, there is no hierarchy with respect to the level of causation in the cross-talk between the levels. In the last two chapters, the evolutionary trend toward ever-increasing complexity in living systems is interpreted in terms of the Gaia hypothesis sensu Lovelock: the entire biosphere is viewed as a functional unit (or 'holobiont-like system') organized to develop and sustain life on Earth.

Ergebnis…se und Perspektiven der internationalen Forschung., Sprache: Deutsch, Abstract: Dieser Aufsatz wird auf den industriell-städtischen Bereich der ehemaligen Sowjetunion, genauer auf dessen slawisch-europäisches Kerngebiet, der Jahre 1928-40 fokussieren. Besondere Aufmerksamkeit soll dabei folgenden Gruppen und deren charakteristischen Verhaltensweisen unter Berücksichtigung der jeweils aktuellen sozial-ökonomisch-politischen Umgebungsbedingungen zukommen, erstens der sowjetischen Arbeiterschaft und zweitens den aus dieser hervorgehenden Führungskadern in Industrie und Wirtschaft. Ferner sollen die ungeheuren verschiedenartigen Transformationsprozesse der dreißiger Jahre erfasst und ihre Auswirkungen auf das situationsspezifische Verhalten der genannten Gruppen aufgezeigt werden. Ziel einer solchen Darstellung soll die Identifikation der Arbeiterschaft und Eliten als weitere wesentliche herrschaftsstabilisierende und konstituierende Elemente des stalinistischen Systems sein. Dieses realpraktische Wirksamkeit entfaltende sozialgeschichtliche Moment kann, so die Annahme, bei der Erweiterung des bestehenden, primär den politischen Raum oberer Ebene analysierenden Totalitarismuskonzepts helfen und auf diese Weise zur Klärung der Entwicklungsbedingungen 'moderner Diktaturen' beitragen. Als alles entscheidende Fragen könnten sich dabei, die nach dem 'Wie ' und 'Warum ' von Identifikation, Partizipation und Integration der genannten Bevölkerungsschichten erweisen. Letztlich sollte sich derart belegen lassen, dass die stalinistisch geprägte Gesellschaftsordnung trotz ihrer massenhaften Opfer eine funktionierende war. Der eigentliche historische Erkenntnisgewinn könnte dabei in der Bestätigung folgender Annahme bestehen, der dass dieses 'Funktionieren' grundsätzlich positiv konnotiert war. Sollte sich diese Hypothese als wahr erweisen, müssten dieser Gesellschaft zugleich zwei konträre aber dennoch wesenhafte Merkmale zugeordnet werden. Zum einen der zielgerichtete Terror , durch Zwang gekennzeichnet und generell negativ besetzt. Zum anderen die anscheinend ständig vorhandenen Möglichkeiten zur 'freiwilligen' Integration , z. B. über die Bereitstellung von massenhaften Aufstiegschancen, verstanden als periodische Verschmelzung verschiedener Interessen zu einer sich uniform gestaltenden 'Gesamtbewegung', in der weder der Sozialismus als System noch die politische Führung als Machtfaktor in Frage gestellt wurden.
