Paperback. Condizione: New. Thorough and meticulously researched, this studyis based on a comprehensive reading of philosophical arguments drawn from allthe major Jewish sources, published and unpublished, from the Geonic period inthe ninth century until the dawn of the Haskalah in the late eighteenthcentury. The core of the book… is a detailed discussion ofthe four doctrines of Christianity whose rationality Jews thought they coulddefinitively refute: trinity, incarnation, transubstantiation, and virginbirth. In each case, Daniel Lasker presents a succinct history of the Christiandoctrine and then proceeds to a careful examination of the Jewish efforts todemonstrate its impossibility. The main text is clearly written in anon-technical manner, with the Christian doctrines and the Jewish responsesboth carefully explained; the notes include long quotations, in Hebrew andArabic as well as in English, from sources that are not readily available inEnglish. At the time of its original publication in 1977this book was regarded as a major contribution to a relatively neglected areaof medieval Jewish intellectual history; the new, wide-ranging introductionprepared for this paperback edition, which surveys and summarizes subsequentscholarship, re-establishes its position as a major work.

Hardback. Condizione: New. Finalist for National Jewish Book Award for Scholarship 2022.Karaite Judaism emerged in the ninth century in the Islamic Middle East as an alternative to the rabbinic Judaism of the Jewish majority. Karaites reject the underlying assumption of rabbinic Judaism, namely, that Jewish practice is to be bas…ed on two divinely revealed Torahs, a written one, embodied in the Five Books of Moses, and an oral one, eventually written down in rabbinic literature. Karaites accept as authoritative only the Written Torah, as they understand it, and their form of Judaism therefore differs greatly from that of most Jews. Despite its permanent minority status, Karaism has been an integral part of the Jewish people continuously for twelve centuries. It has contributed greatly to Jewish cultural achievements, while providing a powerful intellectual challenge to the majority form of Judaism. This book is the first to present a comprehensive overview of the entire story of Karaite Judaism: its unclear origins; a Golden Age of Karaism in the Land of Israel; migrations through the centuries; Karaites in the Holocaust; unique Jewish religious practices, beliefs, and philosophy; biblical exegesis and literary accomplishments; polemics and historiography; and the present-day revival of the Karaite community in the State of Israel.

Hardcover. Condizione: Near fine. First edition. Octavo. xvi, 296pp. Index and 16 page bibliography. Text in English with occasional Hebrew. Light green over purple boards, lettered in purple. Spine sun faded to light blue and very minor bump at foot of spine, otherwise a fine, as new copy. This book discusses major Karaite thin…kers from the twelfth to sixteenth centuries, as well as the central themes in their writings. It also outlines the impact of Karaism on the dominant Rabbanite Jews and their major thinkers, especially Maimonides. It should be of interest to all those who study medieval philosophy, intellectual history, Judaism and sectarianism. The present study is a pioneering account of the development of late medieval Karaite Jewish thought, challenging the oft-repeated assertion that Karaite thinkers remained loyal to Kal?m, the dominant theological philosophy during the earlier Golden Age of Karaism. A careful reading of Karaite sources demonstrates that the watershed figure whose influence led to changes in Karaite thought was the Rabbanite Maimonides, whose attacks on the Kal?m had revealed its scientific shortcomings. (Publisher) Contents: Background -- Major thinkers -- Contacts with Rabbanite thinkers -- Topics -- Into the modern period. (OCLC) Volume 4 of the Brill series "Supplements to the Journal of Jewish Thought and Philosophy" (SJJTP).

Hardcover. Condizione: Very Good. An excellent copy of this uncommon volume, which is Volume 15 in the series "Supplements to The Journal of Jewish Thought and Philosophy" and is a celebration / Festschrift honoring Robert Chazan. Bound in pictorial boards, no dust jacket as issued. Binding is solid and sturdy. Exterior has some… a few tiny pock mark indnets on the front cover at the bottom and is lightly scuffed on both front and back, though all rather negligible. Spine is lightly bumped at the top and bottom. Comes with an invitation to an event held in tandem with this publication at NYU, 2012. Overall an excellent, clean and well-bound copy of this book.
