Its goal was to achieve the intellectual regeneration and social and political elevation of the Jewish people. This book examines the impact of the AIU on Moroccan Jewry. It answers such questions as: How did the AIU establish itself in Morocco's communities? How did it go on to become a power not to be underestimated by either the Moroccan government or the Europeans? And more importantly, how did the AIU improve the conditions of the Jews in Morocco, creating an important French-speaking urban elite? Also discussed are such topics as Zionism and Jewish-Muslim relations in Morocco.

Hardcover. Condizione: Very Good. Condizione sovraccoperta: Very Good. XIV, (1), 400 pages. 235 x 160 mm. Light penciled markings on front blank and c. 20 pages. Easily eraseable, but may be worth keeping since they were by Professor Sara Reguer, Z.L. whose signature appears on the front blank. Professor Sara Reguer, Z.L. Distinguished professor of Judaic studies, Sara Reguer, Z"L. (1943-2023), was professor emerita of Jewish history at Brooklyn College. Prof. Reguer completed her Ph. D. at Columbia where she focused on the Middle East. Her book on Winston Churchill and the Shaping of the Middle East reflected those interests. Subsequently, she branched out to study and publish on Jews in the Middle East, Women, Jews in Italy, and more. Her volume entitled OPINIONATED brings together many of her writings. Late in life, she published MY FATHER'S JOURNEY, based on his memoir, tracing her family's transition from Lithuania to Mandatory Palestine to the United States. Prof Reguer spent her career at Brooklyn College where she educated legions of students and also chaired for some years the history and Jewish Studies programs. "A history of the Maghreb Jews, stressing Zionist activities and emigration to the State of Israel. Ch. 2 (pp. 55-83), "Under Vichy and the Nazi-German Menace: The Jews of North Africa during the 1930s and 1940s, " deals with anti-Jewish measures (legislation, restrictions, and internment) taken by the Germans and Vichy French authorities, and also in Spanish-occupied Tangier. Antisemitism in the prewar period was aroused by the French, and also broke out during the 1936-39 riots in Palestine. After the war, it was manifested in bloody incidents in 1948, such as pogroms in Oujda and in Djerada in Morocco. Arab nationalists were hostile to Jews because of the latters' support for Zionism and emigration to Israel, and because of their alleged lack of identification with Arab national goals. Antisemitic incidents occurred in 1952-56, when the struggle for national independence intensified (in Algeria), and in 1967, in the wake of the Arab-Israeli war". (From the Bibliography of the Vidal Sassoon International Center for the Study of Antisemitism)].
