Summary: The English-born architect of the United States Capitol under Jefferson, Madison, and Monroe, Benjamin Henry Latrobe (1764-1820) set a bold stamp on 19th-century American architecture with such works as the Bank of Pennsylvania and the Baltimore Cathedral. A pioneering engineer as well, he designed the nation's first comprehensive steam-powered waterworks in Philadelphia. The first two volumes in the series, these gorgeously produced books comprise 11 journals written between 1795, when Latrobe arrived in America, and 1798. They are supplemented with selections from his sketchbooks and correspondence, and his "Essay on Landscape," an illustrated guide to elementary watercolor (reproduced in color). A delight to read and a joy to examine. Illustrated with Latrobe's own watercolor sketches and handsomely printed, the Journals should be a welcome addition to the libraries of not only those who collect Americana but who enjoy the discovery of Man's inexhaustible capacity to find meaning and pleasure in all of life's experiences. 3 Kg.

With Prologue, five sections of b/w plates on unpaged leaves, b/w illustrations (including plans and elevation drawings), Appendix, Major Sources (i.e. bibliography), and Index. Critic and bibliographer Bernard Karpel lauded Hamlin's Latrobe monograph as the "definitive biography of 'America's first professional architect.'" An architect and renowned architectural historian, Talbot Hamlin won the 1956 Pulitzer Prize for Biography as well as the Alice Davis Hitchcock Award by the Society of Architectural Historians. Although not a direct student of Frank Lloyd Wright, architect Theodore van Fossen (1919-2010) was a Wright-devotee and drew heavily upon organic architecture and Usonian concepts in his commissions with departures from Wright's pure horizontal line necessitated by construction convenience as well as occasional geometric experiments as to angles and verticality as well as nods to the influence of Philip Johnson and the International Style. In partnership with husband and wife developers and fellow Wright enthusiasts Martha and Richard Wakefield, Ted van Fossen planned and designed most of the fifty-three Usonian-themed residential structures in the landmark Rush Creek Village community of Worthington, Ohio, a development started in 1954 running into the 1970s and so acclaimed for its unity and harmony of design that it was added to the National Register of Historic Places in August 2003. Van Fossen's personal papers, drawings, etc. are held by the University of Minnesota Libraries' Northwest Architectural Archives. The book's inscribees, Sue and Sam T. Martin of Great Falls, Virginia, commissioned Ted Van Fossen to design their residence and evidently became close friends with the noted architect as well.
