Ihre Persönlichkeiten und ihre Leistungen sind in zahl…reichen Publikationen aufgezeichnet und gewürdigt worden. Die Zäsuren der Jahre 1938 und 1945 haben dieser Schule durch den Verlust zahlreicher genialer Persönlichkeiten so schweren Schaden zugefügt, daß an ihrem Weiterbestehen gezweifelt werden kann. Der Mediziner Spitzy und die Journalistin Lau unterzogen sich der schwierigen Aufgabe, eine Befragung heutiger Vertreter der in viele Spezialgebiete expandierten Medizinischen Fakultät durchzuführen, um festzustellen, ob und wie weit die alte Tradition der Wiener Medizinischen Schule im rasanten Fortschrittsdenken einer modernen Medizin in Wien noch oder wieder aufzuspüren ist. Wie es nicht anders zu erwarten war. sind die Antworten der Forscher und Lehrer der heutigen Wiener Medizinischen Schule sehr unterschiedlich ausgefallen. Das wäre auch bei einer Befragung vor 100 oder 200 Jahren so gewesen. Und doch scheint es Spitzy und Lau gelungen zu sein, wenn auch noch so schmale Brücken zwischen der zwei Jahrhunderte alten Tradition und dem heutigen Fortschritt aufzuzeigen. Noch immer leuchtet de Haens "Primat der Klinik" aus der Zeit Van Swietens in den Interviews des ausgehenden 20. Jahrhunderts als Leitgedanke gegen das Überwuchern einer allzu technifizierten Medizin ganz deutlich auf. " Verlag.
