Muhammed Haron montre comment, aux XIXe et XXe siècles, les lettrés musulmans du Cap se sont approprié la langue afrikaans à des fins d'éducation religieuse, produisant un vaste corpus de manuscrits en afrikaans et caractères arabes, comme instrument, non de séparatisme, mais d'intégration. L'auteur souhaite une réintégration dans le patrimoine national de ce patrimoine oublié. Les limites géographiques, politiques, linguistiques et doctrinales habituelles de l'islam subsaharien sont donc bousculées. Ainsi l'image convenue d'un islam africain homogène et traditionnel fait-elle place à une approche plus kaléidoscopique.
