Because of the interest in air combat during World War 2, Grosset and Dunlap put together a set of sixteen boys' books by Thomson Burtis, Eustace Adams, and Al Avery (pseudonym of Rutherford G. Montgomery) and called the series Air Combat Stories For Boys. This is number 9 in a series of 16. The first seven books in the series were first published in the 1930s and are about exploits in the air during World War I and have WWI endpapers. The Yankee Flier portion of the series is about World War II and have WWII endpapers. Al Avery (1894-1985) is the pseudonym of American author Rutherford George Montgomery. Avery is best-known for his works of children's literature. He wrote over 100 books in his career. NOTE: The endpapers for this copy are WW1 Bi-planes even though the story is about WWII. (it's my belief that the publisher made a mistake). Rear panel of DJ lists to this copy. Rear DJ Flap lists to Spitfire Pilot by Canfield Cook published in 1942. Per AAC Boys Series Books by Axe, pg 57,58 and Mattson 01200 and 65800. A superb wartime First Edition that still presents well in the original DJ. LOC SSS-12.
