Condizione: Good. First Edition. Volume II of a 2 volume set, brown cloth (rebound), 1859, 8vo, 15 color lithographs, 3 maps & 30 text illustrations, 496 pp. Laurence Oliphant was a private secretary to Lord Elgin and accompanied him to Calcutta, Hong Kong, Canton, Tientsin and Yedo. The main purpose of the mission was the signing of treaties opening both China and Japan to British trade. The first volume deals primarily with China. The second volume provides a description of the political and social conditions in Japan. ~ Condition. Volume II only. The book is in Good+ condition. It has been rebound in brown cloth. There are several areas where the boards are rubbed and discolored, particularily the bottom right corner of the front board. Scraps along the edges of the boards. There is heavy foxing in the first and last 30 pages. The 15 lithograph plates have foxing in the margins which sometimes extends lightly into the image area. The thre maps are sound and remarkably clean with only occasional foxing. F.G.B. Bedwell (illustratore).
