First edition. First edition of this important Lyon printing of the judicial decisions of the Roman Rota, edited by Ludovicus Gomes (bishop of Sarno, auditor of the Rota and regent of the Apostolic Penitentiary) and Joannes Baptista Coccini, dean of the tribunal. The Roman Rota was the supreme papal appellate court, and its collected decisions circulated widely across Europe as authoritative precedents in canon and civil law. Printed in Lyon in 1623 by Laurent Durand, this handsome folio is set in red and black with a striking engraved printerâs device on the title-page. The work includes a triple index (by decisions, subjects, and places), making it an invaluable reference for jurists and scholars of early modern law. Provenance and Readerâs Use: The front flyleaf bears extensive early bibliographic notes in Latin, referencing Coccini and related collections of Decisiones. These notes provide insight into how an early jurist or scholar actively consulted and compared this text with other sources. Additional marginalia and ink annotations appear in the text, further indicating active scholarly and legal engagement. An early ownership inscription (âClementâ) is present on the endpaper, adding traceable provenance. The copy shows evidence of professional use by a canonist or lawyer, enhancing its value as a research artifact for legal historians. A substantial and significant legal folio documenting the jurisprudence of the Roman Catholic Churchâs supreme court of appeals. This copy is particularly valuable for its evidence of early readership and legal consultation, offering material for research into canon law reception and early modern jurisprudence. Lyon 1623 folio of the judicial decisions of the Roman Rota, first edition, with early manuscript bibliographic notes, marginalia, and ownership inscription, showing active legal readership. Good â" limp vellum binding browned and wrinkled with small losses; textblock complete and crisp, with early annotations and provenance. Contemporary limp vellum with manuscript spine title. Vellum browned, wrinkled, with small losses at foot of spine, remnants of ties, but structurally sound. Folio. Printerâs device on title-page (Laurent Durand, Lyon, 1623) (illustratore).…
