Spirit of Kuhmo is a book about the artists, their audience, and an unflagging team of volunteers, the creators and sustainers of the spirit that is Kuhmo. Every year for a quarter of a century, the Kuhmo Chamber Music Festival has brought together musicians and music enthusiasts from around the world. Out of their shared love of music has grown the concept of the Spirit of Kuhmo, a phenomenon that is now as well known in Tokyo, New York or Helsinki. The magnificent, tranquil natural surroundings of Kuhmo persuaded Seppo Kimanen to offer the Kuhmo Music Society an idea that was "somewhat unique in Finland", That was back in 1970, and the idea grew into the international Kuhmo Chamber Music Festival. Photographer Stefan Bremer has recorded in his pictures the joy and anguish of playing, the magic ecstasy of music and those tiny everyday details that together create the Spirit of Kuhmo, The Japanese poet Makoto ?oka and the Finnish writer and musician Lauri Otonkoski put it into words in their poems, while journalist Risto Lindstedt describes the everyday life of the festival.

Text in Finnish. 111 pp. Timo Kelaranta utilizes the illusion of truth soaked in the surface of a photograph only to deny it, to prevent anyone from looking through. The perspective opens onto the fascinating world of abstraction. External reality, that-what-has-been, is a pretext, a hook from which expression is suspended. A sense of material, heaviness and hardness make way for immateriality. Pain and anxiety are not far away; neither are sanctity or an experience of union. Alongside pain there is a gentler vein aiming at a shared experience and its fulfilment. The second part of the book consists of an anthology of poems by Lauri Otonkoski. The preface is by the art historian Arja Elovirta. SubImages is published as no. 4/2000 of Musta taide.
