Wahlen et A.Dewasme, 1827, large in-4°, 35,5 x 27 cm, (4)nn pp + v pp + 127 pp + (59/60) full page lithographic views printed on ''Chine appliqué'' and with 14 lithographic illustrations in the text. Bound in modern boards, boards covered with marbled paper, leather title label on spine. The frontispiece plate is missing, some pages have clear waterstains, Last 20 leaves with a dark waterstain in the upper inside corner ( not affecting the text nor the views), some pages with some browning. Not withstanding these defects still a worthy and rare specimen of early Belgian romantic bookillustration. The book apperaed in installments. This is the most expensive edition where the plates were printed on China paper. The publication is the Belgian answer to the French edition which appeared one year earlier and was printed on a smalle format. The Belgian lithographer P. Lauters, destined to make a highly successful career as a lithographer was barely 20 years old when he made the lithographs. The book is a testimony of the revival of the romantic interest in Scotland which was brought on by Walter Scott ( see at length J.H.M. Van der Marck - Romantische Boekillustratie in België - Roermond 1956).…

Half cloth binding (restored), original printed boards preserved, endpapers renewed, some fine spots at a few plates, small tear in the margin of the first 4 plates repaired but a fine/good copy. This album contains 22 lithographies numbered 1-3,5-6,8,11,12,14-16,18,22-26,28-32. A complete album of the first edition contained 60 plates. This is the third edition, the first under this name. We have not been able to ascertain how many plates there should be. (See Van der Marck pp.126). …

Perfect interior (no stains nor spotting); binding very fresh, with minimal shelf wear. A near perfect copy. Very fine example of one of the highlights of Belgian romantic book illustration by the socalled ''peintres-lithographes''. 36 lithos are from Lauters , the remaining by Billoin (Lauters' brother-in-law). The work started in 1836 and was finished in1840; it consisted of 12 issues of 5 plates. Our copy is the second edition (1844) . A chromolithographic title page was added.
