As the note on the dust jacket explains: "This book has not been condensed. Its bulk is less because of government paper quota regulations restricting all publishers.".

American journalist and publisher Lawrence Spivak (1900-94) was publisher of The American Mercury but is best known for his later association with NBC's "Meet the Press." Charles Angoff (1902-79), a Mencken protege, was managing editor of The American Mercury.

The American Mercury was an American magazine published from 1924 to 1981. It was founded as the brainchild of H. L. Mencken and drama critic George Jean Nathan. The magazine featured writing by some of the most important writers in the United States through the 1920s and 1930s. The magazine went out of print in 1981, having spent the last 25 years of its existence in decline and controversy.
