A former soldier turned fur trader and explorer, La Vérendrye pressed the boundaries of New France and its fur trading operations west from the Lake of the Woods into the prairies. While the quest to find a water route to the Pacific Ocean was unsuccessful, the explorations of La Verendrye and his sons in the early 18th century covered enormous territory, including the Manitoba lakes, Saskatchewan River, Missouri River, and locations as distant as what is now North Dakota and Wyoming. Original French text accompanied by English translation. Originally published as Champlain Society Publication XVI in Toronto, 1927.
