Sixth Impression thus. Jack B. Lawson's copy of his co-authored index to Wittgenstein'sTractatus, along with his working copy of the text, the sixth impression thus from 1955, and first to contain an index. Lawson was a minor science fiction writer, publishing a few stories inIfandGalaxymagazines between 1964-1967. However, his main output was this index, which is described in one of the laid-in reviews from Psychiatric Quarterly, April 1963: "The usual means of approaching the works of a philosopher, or philosophic school, with which one is not familiar is to obtain a brief and (one hopes) lucid introduction which allows one to orient the subject within a familiar framework. Plochmann and Lawson have arranged their index according to the words of the English text and have given the German equivalents in brackets. Beneath these appear the references themselves, together with key phrases to indicate the particular meaning involved. .[Their] production is a valuable, even necessary adjunct to theTractatusand will greatly enhance its value, but Wittgenstein remains a tough customer!" This set provides a detailed look at the complex workings of one of the scholars who has tried to make Wittgenstein, the "tough customer," more approachable in the English language. 2 volumes, 8vos, 207, 8pp and 229pp. The Tractatus (in German and English) heavily underlined and annotated in Lawson's hand. Both in cloth boards, the Tractatus worn and rubbed and with library pocket to rear pastedown. The Index, near fine. Laid into the index are a couple typed and one copied reviews of the book.
