One of the most interesting and detailed maps of the region, called by Wheat "a Nevada map of first importance." The map designates Lake Tahoe as Lake Bigler, as it was initially named; however, in the Table of Distances the lake is designated as Lake Ta-hoe. The map was first issued in 1862 (copyrighted 1861). In the earlier editions of the map, the Nevada-Utah border is on the 116th meridian (as in the present example). In one of the 1863 editions, the border is moved to the 115th Meridian. Warren Heckrotte notes several states as indicated by Carl Wheat in Mapping the Transmississippi West, pointed out that a copy he owned was after Wheat's #1070, dated 1863 but copyrighted 1862, but before #1071, dated and copyrighted 1863, as is the present example.This is a first rate map of California as it was in 1863 and is especially good for the mining districts in Nevada and southern California. In the latter is shown "Road to New Gold Mines" [from Soda Springs] across the Colorado in Arizona - Streeter.Rumsey notes that this is a superb map, full of interesting and exotic information. The treatment of the Land and Mining Districts in Nevada and California is remarkable, as are the depiction of the roads in Nevada to the mining districts. The map is also one of the earliest maps of California printed in San Francisco.In this 1863 edition, A.J. Doolittle is still listed as one of the mapmakers and the title has been revised to reference the Silver Mining Districts of Nevada Territory. The line of the Southern Pacific Railroad is now shown, extending from Ft. Mohave to San Francisco.One of the best large format maps of California from the period.RarityA rare map. Map.
