Condizione: Gut. 208 p. Einband leicht berieben, insgesamt vergilbt, sonst guter Zustand / Binding slightly rubbed, overall yellowed, otherwise in good condition. - The contents of this volume were largely intended to form the third part of the trilogy whose earlier volumes were The Living Principle and Thought, Words and Creati…vity. The essays and papers here testify to the widening scope of F. R. Leaviss concern with the problems and predicaments of contemporary civilization, with the idea of the university as a creative centre of an educated public, and with the nature of thought, in a non-philosophical sense, as it occurs and operates in creative writing. Among others, they treat of such writers as Blake and Wordsworth, whose greatness seems indisputable and yet is hard to account for satisfactorily. That greatness cannot be merely historical, for great literature has its life in the present or not at all. I, as is fairly widely known, Leavis remarks with some irony, believe in the critics business. The mode of discussion characterizing the lectures is often, as he said at the time, frankly personal and informal, and (in particular) Gerard Manley Hopkins: Reflections after Fifty Years and Memories of Wittgenstein do much to evoke, with sharpness and economy, the past of the critic himself. From the early 1920s, when he began to teach in Cambridge, until his death in 1978, his business and his life were inextricably interwoven. Several essays of earlier date, now not easily accessible, have been included: on Coleridge and Arnold as critics, on Hardys poetry and on Joyces Work in Progress. Taschenbuch. Condizione: Neu. Druck auf Anfrage Neuware - Printed after ordering - This volume gathers together some of F. R. Leavis's earliest work with the things he was working on before his death, as well as a representative sample of pieces reflecting the concerns he developed throughout his writing life. This material, fro…m the whole span of a long writing career, shows both the continuity of his pre-occupations and important respects in which his judgements changed. In an introductory essay Professor Singh discusses each piece and relates it to the development of Leavis's ideas. The reader can trace his concern for standards of critical valuation as it evolved through studies of T. S. Eliot, D. H. Lawrence, William Empson, George Eliot, Henry James, W. B. Yeats, I. A. Richards and others. Leavis's well-known reflections on Marxism are also included.

Paperback. Condizione: new. Paperback. This volume is almost certain to be the last collection of F. R. Leavis's essays to include previously unpublished material. It also gathers together essays, reviews, articles, lectures and notes which have not appeared in volume form before, or which are now relatively hard to find. An add…itional interest is that the contents range from his very first published articles to the things he was engaged in writing immediately before his final illness. This material, from the whole span of a long writing career, shows both the continuity of his preoccupations and important respects in which his judgements changed.
