Book is a result of a symposium on Cryosurgery held at the Neuropsychiatric Institute of the University of California on March 11 and 12, 1967. From the authors' Introduction: "For centuries a method of surgery has been sought which would permit the removal or destruction of diseased tissues without pain and risk of hemorrhage. This hope is closer to realization with recent developmetns in cryosurgery. Cryosurgery implies procedures carried out at temperatures below the freezing point of tissues, the surgical objective being accomplished through cell death or, in some techniques, through the establishment of an ice bond between tissue and instrument. Thus, the adhesiveness of such a bond permits the removal of cataracts more safely than with many traditional methods. On the other hand the disruptive effect of ice formation on cell structure can be used to destroy certain benign and malignant tumors. Cabe mencionar como sobresaliente su trabajo pionero en el campo de la microcirugía de laringe para restaurar y mejorar la función vocal, hoy conocida como fonocirugía, término acuñado por el propio Hans von Leden junto con Gottfried Arnold en 1963. En 1961, von Leden y su esposa, Mary Louise, se mudaron a Los Ángeles, donde se convirtió en profesor en la Facultad de Medicina de UCLA y abrió su Instituto de Laringología y Trastornos de la Voz. En 1966, asumió la Cátedra de Biocomunicación en la Universidad del Sur de California en Los Ángeles. Además, trabajó como consultor de la Marina de los Estados Unidos, la Escuela de Música Julliard, Nueva York, y fue miembro del personal honorario del Hospital Lenox Hill, Nueva York.
