Children's story from the 1930s of "good times on a plantation" c. the 1850s, promoted as "another fine story of the South" by Knox, who had penned similar children's tales set in her native Alabama. The heroine of the tale is Miss Jimmy Deane, who spends happy times with her older sisters & new playmate, Darling, a young black slave "given" to her as the young mistress of the house as a lifelong friend & companion. And "happy times were had by all, both black and white." Typical of books in the Jim Crow-era South, which attempted to whitewash the South's dark history with slavery. Though praised as "cultural sensitive" at the time, Ms. Knox's books are today considered quite racist. In 230 pages, with pen-and-ink illustrations throughout & decorative endpapers by Manning Lee. Orig. published in 1931, this is a 1946 printing from Doubleday. Hardcover small octavo has red-orange cloth-covered boards stamped in black & with a black publisher's symbol to spine. Condition is Near Fine: exceptionally clean, binding strong & straight, hinges secure. Pages creamy off-white with moderate tanning, but completely unmarked. Very mild corner bumping.
