First edition (as stated upon copyright page) SIGNED BY EDITOR STANLEY F. HORN. 542 pages. Hardcover: H 22.25cm x L 15cm. Dust jacket rubbed with faint foxing, nicks and short tears as well as some creasing along edges; strong moisture stain and small chip at spine heel; light slender staining along bottom of lightly soiled whit…e rear panel; dj now presented in a mylar Brodart protector. Red cloth; top board corners well bumped; spine's gilt and blue stamping remains vibrant; light staining at spine heel and at bottom of rear board. Mild toning to top edge; light toning to deckle fore-edge. Very light toning to endpapers; light foxing at margins of book's b/w plates and to their adjacent pages; interior text pages reflect some bumping at their top corners but are otherwise quite clean. Editor's ink signature "Stanley Horn" on front free endpaper. Binding is firm. A very good copy in a good+ dust jacket.

Fair condition - needs to be re-cased. Probable first edition (per OCLC - two other competing imprints also issued in 1897). 586 pages. Hardcover: H 23.75cm x L 19.25cm. No dust jacket. Original gray cloth soiled, rubbed, and stained; tears at frayed spine ends; board corners worn. Text block edges toned and soiled. Floral patte…rned pastedowns but missing both front and rear free endpapers; likely missing a front flyleaf or two as first leaf present is title/copyright; foxing and some soiling to interior leaves. Front and rear hinges quite shaken; several stress points to text block with several quires slightly pulled - book needs to be re-cased and sold as is. OCLC cites three 1897 editions - an Atlanta, GA imprint by H.C. Hudgins & Co. and two Richmond imprints by B.F. Johnson Publishing Co. and this Royal Publishing Company imprint. As the author was a Richmond, Virginia resident it is likely that the book was first published in Richmond but it is uncertain which Richmond publisher's edition has priority. Editor Robert A. Brock served with the 21st Virginia Infantry during the Civil War and served as secretary for the Virginia Historical Society as well as the Southern Historical Society. Please note that this thick book has an approximate shipping weight of 4.75 pounds (2.15 kg) and may require additional postage for any postal class other than domestic Media Mail.

Needs to be re-backed at a minimum - sold as is. First edition (not stated but per matching 1874 dates upon title and copyright pages). Collates as i-xvi, 1-509, [blank recto], [publisher advertising leaf]. Six steel plate b/w engravings on unpaged leaves all present including frontispiece although plate #6 is bound-in opposite…page 456 (contents calls for opposite page 446); all six plates retain their tissue guard sheets. Thirteen wood engravings all present at correct spots with twelve being on unpaged leaves. Hardcover: H 23.75cm x L 15.5cm. Green cloth boards rubbed with some mottling and worn edges particularly at corners; spine's surface cloth detached but present with shallow losses at ends (easily re-backed by a binder); gilt stamping to spine and front board remains fairly bright. Rear board rather tenuously attached at joint/hinge; front board a bit pliable at hinge but holding. Toning/foxing to text block edges with some fore-edge stains affecting margins. Front free endpaper removed; past owner's old pencil inscription on front flyleaf; bottom half of rear free endpaper removed with pencil writing at top of rfep recto. Chip at lower fore-edge margin of pages 351-352; top corner of pages 467-468 creased from past fold-down; some foxing and soiling to interior leaves with some stains and scattered pencil marks. Text block remains firm. Book made a bit more presentable by newly applied clear mylar dj to secure boards and detached spine cloth. This 1874 first edition is considerably scarcer than the 1875 second.
