Georges Lefebvre (6 August 1874 - 28 August 1959) was a French historian, best known for his work on the French Revolution and peasant life. He coined the term "history from below", which was later popularized by the British Marxist Historians, and the phrase the "death certificate of the old order" to describe the Great Fear of 1789. Among his most significant works was the 1924 book Les Paysans du Nord pendant la Révolution française ("The Peasants of the North During the French Revolution"), which was the result of 20 years of research into the role of the peasantry during the revolutionary period. In 1935 Georges Lefebvre became the president of the Societé des Études Robespierristes. In 1937 Lefebvre became Chair of the History of the French Revolution at the Sorbonne. Whether viewed as an inspired leader or obsessed tyrant, Napoleon has divided opinion for over 200 years. Few individuals have left such a mark on history. Georges Lefebvre's classic work is a definitive portrait of the Napoleonic era. Lefebvre's history sweeps us from the lightning coup d'etat of 18 Brumaire in 1799 to Tilsit and then to his final downfall amidst the wheatfields of Waterloo. It is a brilliant survey of the turbulent age Napoleon inaugurated in his attempt to redraw the map of Europe, from the Peninsular War to the invasion of Russia. The cast includes his antagonists - Pitt the Younger, Wellington, Metternich and Tsar Alexander - and his allies - the Fouche and Talleyrand. The boards are in great shape save a 2" x 1" (approximate) dampstain on the rear, lower panel. The corners are sharp, but the top front corner is a little bumped. Pencil price on the FFEP at the top corner. The end papers are clean from other remainder marks except for some faint foxing. The DJ has some fraying around the corners and the spine. There are some tears about 1" long or less on the rear panel. The is a fair amount of shelf wear to the DJ. Overall, the DJ has done its job. There is a small rectangular hole 1/2" x 1" cut from the first DJ flap. Presumably, the price was here.…
