Noted for her boldness and idealism, she was a pioneering figure in the American theater, setting the stage for the Off-Broadway and regional theater movements that swept the country later in the 20th century. Sie spielte Hauptrollen in zahlreichen klassischen Werken etwa von Ibsen, Tschechow und Shakespeare und war eine Pionierin des Repertoiresystems in den USA. Le Gallienne galt als eine der führenden Bühnenkünstlerinnen ihrer Zeit und wurde 1964 mit einem Sonder-Tony Award ausgezeichnet. Ihre Offenheit in Bezug auf ihre Homosexualität war zu ihrer Zeit außergewöhnlich mutig.
