Griswold. First edition. Very scarce. Translated and annotated by James Legge "with a corean recension of the Chinese text"; this is bound to precede the English translation in this copy. Illustrated with a folding sketch map of Fa-hien's travels and eight plates. Collated, lacking plate no. VI. Lacking title page and page 123, the final page to the index. Date and imprint found from a copy held by Hathi Trust. Preface is also dated 1886. Of the Chinese text, missing A2-A3, and F2-F3. With one leaf not included in Hathi Trust's copy to the front of the work, laid down to the verso of the front endpaper. The famous account of the pilgrimage taken on foot by Chinese Buddhist monk Fa-hien to medieval India to acquire Buddhist scriptures. The journet and return took from 399 to 412, with 10 years spent in India. This copy previously owned by Alexander Brown Griswold (1907-1991), an American art historian known for his work in Thai art history and epigraphy. Born into an established banking family of Baltimore, he became acquainted with Thailand while serving in the army during World War II, and developed an interest in the country's history and culture, thereafter dedicating himself to the study of its history and archaeology. Bythe 1960s he had become recognized as an expert authority on Thai traditional art, particularly in the area of sculpture.
