Hardcover. Condizione: Fine. Octavo, blue cloth and red cover label lettered in gilt. First edition, first printing, one of 200 copies. A presentation copy, inscribed: "To my friend and associate Philip C. Jessup, with kindest regards and very sincere appreciation of his unfailing encouragement and assistance in making a great international agency for peace and good will among peoples of the world, Herbert H. Lehman, March 28, 1947," on the front endpaper. [Together with] Jessup's copy of "Funeral Service for Hon. Herbert H. Lehman, December 8, 1963" (Stamford: The Overbrook Press, 1963; octavo, gray wrappers printed in black). ---- The recipient, Philip C. Jessup, a judge on the International Court of Justice at The Hague and veteran U.S. diplomat, was credited with playing a major role in ending the Soviet blockade of West Berlin. Jessup was a representative to the United Nations General Assembly, as well as a U.S. ambassador at large from 1949 until his resignation in 1953. During that time, he was one of the closest advisers of then-Secretary of State Dean Acheson. Meanwhile, from 1943 until 1946, as director of the United Nations Relief and Rehabilitation Administration, Lehman directed the largest international relief effort in history: 24 million tons of food, clothing, and medical supplies to 500 million victims of world war. After Jessup was maligned by Senator Joe McCarthy for purported communist "affinities," General Dwight D. Eisenhower heralded Jessup's "devotion to the principles of Americanism." McCarthy's charges kept Jessup from being reappointed to the U.S. delegation to the United Nations in 1951 but President Harry S. Truman made him an alternate delegate the following year. Like Jessup, when Senator Lehman fought McCarthyism, his colleagues told him he was committing political suicide. But Lehman said, "I will not compromise with my conscience. I will cast my vote to protect the liberties of our people." Voters respected his integrity and reelected him to the Senate. A moving tribute with a distinguished provenance. Inscribed by Author(s).
