Paperback. Condizione: New. Print on Demand. This book provides a unique literary and historical account of the bitter feuds and controversies that raged within the medical profession in 18th-century London. Animosity reigned as factions within the College of Physicians fiercely vied for control and influence, hindering efforts to provide affordable and accessible healthcare to the poor. The author, a prominent physician and member of the contentious College, was an active participant in these struggles. Drawing on his own experiences and observations, he crafted a satirical masterpiece, a mock-heroic poem titled The Dispensary, that cleverly uses epic conventions to explore the petty rivalries and greed that plagued the medical establishment of his time. This book, both entertaining and insightful, offers a glimpse into the inner workings of a profession grappling with the balance between personal ambition and the pursuit of the common good. The author's sharp wit and vivid portrayal of these historical events provide a timeless commentary on the complexities of human nature and the enduring quest for progress in the face of adversity. Paperback. Condizione: New. Print on Demand. This book is an epic poem that tells the story of a dispute between apothecaries and physicians in the 17th century. The author, a physician himself, uses satire to criticize the practices of the apothecaries, whom he sees as more interested in making money than in healing the sick. The poem is full of humor and wit, and it provides a valuable insight into the medical profession of the time. The author also explores the broader themes of the relationship between science and art, and the nature of truth and deception. This book is a classic of English literature, and it continues to be read and enjoyed today for its wit, its wisdom, and its insights into the human condition.
