Complete With 20 colored lithographed plates, About Juan Lembeye (1816-1889) was born in Spain but lived for thirty years in Cuba. While most of the plates are drawn -- in many cases copied outright -- from Audubon's Birds of America, the royal octavo edition of which was finished in 1844. This does not, however, detract from the novelty and originality of the work; the descriptions and fieldwork are all Lembeye's proper. Because there was not an established practice of publications of this sort in Cuba. ULTRA RARE BOOK, VERY SCARCE and on good condition.

Hardcover. Condizione: Very good. First. CUBA'S ONLY BOOK OF BIRD ILLUSTRATIONS. First edition. Quarto (9 15/16" x 6 11/16", 253mm x 170mm). With 20 lithographed plates, 19 with original hand-color (pl. 13 not colored). Bound in slightly later half brown morocco over marbled boards. On the spine, four raised bands with a wavy gilt roll. Title gilt to the second panel. Turquoise patterned end-papers. Hinges slightly cracked top-and-bottom. A single wormhole extending from the lower front hinge through to the first free end-paper. Generally quite tanned, with one plate (2) heavily so. Consistent foxing. Some repairs to the versos of plates. Juan Lembeye (1816-1889) was born in Spain but lived for thirty years in Cuba. While most of the plates are drawn -- in many cases copied outright -- from Audubon's Birds of America, the royal octavo edition of which was finished in 1844. This does not, however, detract from the novelty and originality of the work; the descriptions and fieldwork are all Lembeye's proper. Because there was not an established practice of publications of this sort in Cuba, the book has not aged particularly well; the binding does not point to where the copy ended up, but if it spent a good deal of time near its place of publication the heat and humidity of the island may well have contributed to the overall tanning. That said, the book is rare in any condition; only eight copies appear on Rare Book Hub. The book is also rather iconic in Cuba, some of its illustrations having been reproduced on cigar wrappers. Nissen and Zimmer call for only 18 of the plates to be colored, and so the present copy might be called extra-colored. Zimmer notes that it is "considered a great rarity."
