Pratt y faisait la satire de Philip Stanhope, lors Chesterfield (1694-1773), personnalité politique et littéraire anglaise. En effet, ce roman fut considéré comme divertissant mais présentant les scènes de séduction, le vice, de manière trop attrayante. Ce roman s'inscrit dans la tradition des romans épistolaires dont la légèreté voire le libertinage étaient courants. La première édition de ce roman, publiée par les mêmes libraires, avait été publiée l'année précédente avec pour titre L'élève du plaisir, sans la mention ou les maximes pernicieuses.
