(Baksidestext:) "Författarna har först och främst behandlat vad som kan betecknas som 'kvinnligt konstnärskap'. Avsikten har varit att sätta in kvinnornas skapande i ett vidare sammanhang. En rad konstnäre…r diskuteras i förhållande till den tid de verkar i, och likaså kvinnornas möjligheter att skapa nya uttrycksformer och erövra en plats på den konstnärliga arenan. Även om avsikten inte har varit att göra en historisk översikt visar det sig att de kvinnliga konstnärernas position under nittonhundratalet har förskjutits från periferin in mot centrum. Kvinnornas ställning på konstscenen har berott och beror fortfarande på valet av material och teknik. För kvinnor som arbetar med nya medier, som fotografi, video och datorbaserad konst, har det åtminstone hittills varit lättare att slå igenom än för dem som väljer traditionella tekniker som måleri. De hävdvunna teknikerna är mer belastade av den konstnärliga kanon, det vill säga av det regelverk som styr vad som inom en kultur anses vara god konst. Århundradena igenom har reglerna gynnat de manliga konstnärerna och de gamla teknikerna. Genom att närmare undersöka några svenska konstnärskap har författarna velat visa inte bara vilken framgång kvinnorna hade under nittonhundratalet utan också att kvinnorna utvecklade nya uttrycksformer som i sin tur allmänt har påverkat det konstnärliga uttrycket - hos både kvinnliga och manliga konstnärer. Ett centralt tema är de relationer mellan material, uttryck och de särskilda förutsättningar som råder under en viss tid. Boken, som spänner över mer än hundra år, presenterar både tidiga modernister och samtida datorkonstnärer. Internationella utblickar vidgar det historiska och geografiska sammanhanget.".
