Naturally, the field of mixture formation and combustion in the spark-ignition engine… has wit nessed great technological advances and many new findings in the intervening years, so that the time seemed ripe for presenting a summary of recent research and developments. There fore, I gladly took up the suggestion of the editors of this series of books, Professor Dr. H. List and Professor Dr. A. Pischinger, to write a book summarizing the present state of the art. A center of activity of the Institute of Internal-Combustion Engines and Automotive Engineering at the Vienna Technical University, which I am heading, is the field of mixture formation -there fore, many new results that have been achieved in this area in collaboration with the respective industry have been included in this volume. The basic principles of combustion are discussed only to that extent which seemed necessary for an understanding of the effects of mixture formation. The focal point of this volume is the mixture formation in spark-ignition engines, covering both the theory and actual design of the mixture formation units and appropriate intake manifolds. Also, the related measurement technology is explained in this work.

Ludwig MUSIL stehenden 'Beirats für sinnvolle Energieanwendung' durch den Herrn Bundesminister für Handel, Gewerbe und Indu…strie im Jahre 1974 wurde ein Arbeitskreis für Fra gen der Energieeinsparung im Straßenverkehr gebildet, dessen Leitung Herr Univ.-Prof. Dipl.-Ing. Dr. sc. techno Hans Pet er LENZ, Vorstand des Instituts für Verbrennungskraftmaschinen und Kraftfahrwesen an der Technischen Uni versität Wien, übernommen hat. Um die zahlreichen, von verschiedenen Seiten vorgebrachten Anregungen zur Verringerung des Energieaufwands beim Individualverkehr in systematischer Weise zu ordnen, hat Univ.-Prof. Dr. LENZ vorgeschlagen, diese Anregungen nach dem Verhältnis zu klassifizieren, in welchem der für eine bestimmte Ein sparung erforderliche Aufwand zu dem hiedurch erzielten Nutzen, d.h. dem Einsparungseffekt, steht. Da dies als ein so selbstverständlicher und naheliegen der Gedanke erschienen war, war auch Univ.-Prof. Dr. LENZ der Meinung, daß er wohl anderswo bereits durchgeführt worden sei. Eine zunächst an ihn in Auftrag gegebene weitgesteckte internationale Litera turrecherche hat jedoch ergeben, daß wohl einzelne Untersuchungen in dieser Richtung durchgeführt worden sind, daß aber eine umfassende, systematische Arbeit zwar vielfach als erforderlich und nützlich angesehen würde, die bisher jedoch nirgends ausgeführt worden ist. Dieses Ergebnis hat dann Anlaß zu einem weiteren Auftrag an Univ.-Prof. Dr. LENZ gegeben, bei dem alle relevanten Einsparungsmöglichkeiten und Anreize zur Einsparung im Straßenverkehr methodisch und kritisch zusammengestellt und nach einheitlichen Gesichtspunkten einerKosten-Nutzen-Analyse unter zogen wurden.

Den Schwerpunkt des Bandes stellt die Gemischbildung für Ottomotoren dar, sowohl bezüglich der Grundlagen als auch hinsichtlich der Ausführung der Gemischbildner, d.h. der Einspritzsysteme und der Vergaser sowie der zugehörigen Saugrohre. Ebenso wird auf die dazugehörige Meßtechnik eingegangen. Die Grundlagen der Verbrennung werden in dem Umfang erläutert, als sie zum Verständnis der Auswirkung der Gemischbildung erforderlich sind. Das Buch soll sowohl dem in Forschung und Praxis tätigen Ingenieur als auch Studierenden und sonstigen Fachleuten, die sich auf diesem Gebiet vertiefen wollen, einen Überblick über den Stand des Wissens und der Technik geben. Auch nach mehr als 100jähriger Entwicklung im Motorenbau wird gerade auf diesem Gebiet heute weltweit intensive Forschung betrieben; große Fortschritte sind zu verzeichnen. 400 Literaturquellen aus aller Welt wurden berücksichtigt.
