Paperback. Condizione: New. This volume is the second of the thirteen in preparation that will offer the first complete scholarly edition of the poetry and music of Guillaume de Machaut, the foremost practitioner of these related arts at the end of the Middle Ages in France. It provides a freshly prepared edition based on the most reliable manuscript of two of Machaut's best known dits, the Remede de Fortune (Remedy for Fortune) and the Confort d'ami (Consolation from a Friend), both of which adapt the central ideas of Boethian philosophy to the love poetry tradition. The French texts are accompanied by facing English translations, and the musical passages are presented in situ in a performance-accessible form.…

Buch. Condizione: Neu. Neuware - The 'Vows of the Peacock' - written in 1312 and dedicated to Thibaut de Bar, bishop of Liège - recounts how Alexander the Great comes to the aid of a family of aristocrats threatened by Indians. The poem remained popular throughout the fourteenth century and was soon followed by two sequels. Twenty-six illuminated manuscripts constitute part of a catalogue and concordance of all Peacock manuscripts. One of the most provocative, (PML, MS G24), has twenty-two miniatures which illustrate chivalry and courtly love, as epitomized in the text. An unusually high number of scurrilous marginalia, however, surround them. An interdisciplinary exploration of iconography, reception, image-text-marginalia dynamics, and context reveals their ultimate polysemy as scatological comedians and serious harbingers of sin.…

'This is one of the most important sources for the works of Guillaume de Machaut, and thanks to the generosity of its owners, James E and Elizabeth J Ferrell, it has gone from being the most secret and enigmatic of the Machaut sources to the most accessible, and is the first to be produced in facsimile. It is a very large manuscript and the introduction and full-size facsimile have been produced in two volumes, introductory study (vol. 1: 232 pp. colour and b/w) and facsimile (vol. 2: 796 pp. Full colour) in a slipcase. The introduction is a multi-author work, with extensive new content and contextual study by Prof Lawrence Earp revealing hitherto unknown information about the provenance of the book in the library of the Duc du Berry together with a comprehensive history of its ownership up to the 20th century. Domenic Leo has provided a detailed discussion of the art-historical aspects of the book, and Carla Shapreau contributed an explosive chapter about the plunder and restitution of the manuscript during WWII. Christopher de Hamel, Fellow Librarian of Corpus Christi College, Cambridge has contributed a preface covering the recent history and present ownership of the book.'. …
