Trade paperback. First edition. 152 p. Ice Hockey in the Desert. What Was I Thinking? The Legacy of Leo Golembiewski and the Icecats brings you behind the scenes of college ice hockey to a fast-moving, high-energy world where the players learn lessons about life and living from the coach who brought hockey to the desert. The book follows the dream of Icecats coach Leo Golembiewski from his four years as a college goalie in Illinois where he earned the reputation of stopping the most shots in the league s history, to choosing between a National Hockey League career or that of an educator and coach, to creating a Division I college hockey team of American-born players. The place he chose for that team was in the Sonoran desert of Tucson, Arizona. But as Golembiewski says, It is not about winning. The philosophy he expounds in dealing with the players on his team is deceptively simple: Family comes first, then academics, and then hockey. He teaches his players about living and about knowing who they are. His intent is straightforward Golembiewski wants to improve their attitudes toward moms and dads, siblings, friends and teammates.
