Extrait du quatrième de couverture : Les grands sites ont-ils toujours une grande histoire ? Le destin d'Usson, qui culmine à 631 m. d'altitude, en pleine Auvergne, avec, jadis, son château à « la silhouette majestueuse, aux barbacanes avancées, aux vingt tours élançant leurs flèches, aux festons de pierre, aux plates-formes fantastiques » (.), détruit, hélas, en 1634, apparaît, sous la plume de Léon Vasseur, comme une réponse affirmative à cette question. De même celui de Sauxillanges, dont l'origine est très ancienne et qui, d'abord formé de quelques huttes primitives, atteignit assez vite l'importance d'une petite ville de plus de deux mille habitants, dont les armes étaient « d'azur à trois donjons d'or posés deux et un ». Toutefois, pour Usson, il faut remonter bien au-delà du Xe siècle (première mention du château en 927) et même de son évocation comme vicairie carolingienne au IXe siècle, pour voir se dessiner son rôle réel : religieux (lieu de culte celtique), militaire et politique (Louis XI en fit une prison d'État, « où rien ne pouvait entrer de force que le soleil »), dont la renommée confina à la célébrité quand Marguerite de Valois y fut assignée à résidence pendant près de vingt ans (embellissements, intrigues, art, vie amoureuse).
