Von 1922 bis 1937 war er dann Generalmusikdirektor in Stuttgart und bis 1945 auch Lehrer an der dortigen Musikhochschule. Mehrfach in dieser Zeit war er auch Musikassistent bei den Bayreuther Festspielen. 1937-51 leitete er gleichzeitig das Institut für Musikwissenschaften an der Universität Tübingen. 1940 sollte er als Nachfolger Peter Raabes die Präsidentschaft der Reichsmusikkammer übernehmen, wurde aber von Goebbels als "etwas zu wissenschaftlich" abgelehnt.
